With the new generation of consols, I am sure you can get a PS3 faily cheap, depending on where you life, and the Legacy Collection is nicely made, 1080p 60fps and you will have no headaches with optimization of the emulation or any settings.
If you by no means can do Solution 2, try to emulate, the emulators are rather good, but you will skip MGS4, since it is only on PS3. If you can, and your financial situation allows you this (again, I understand that even a 100 dollar purchase is something people think over, I do that myself) try to get your hands on a working PS3 and just skip yourself a lot of headaches. Sorry to respond to an old thread, but you seem educated on this. I have a good PC and and a ps3, do you think the MGS 2 and 3 experience is better emulated on PC or is the HD collection (not legacy) a better solution? I'll probably get the hd collection anyways for peace walker, but wikipedia says some features are missing from the HD re-release (some modes,minigames and online support), so would it be better to play the emulated ps2 version of substance and subsistence? In regards to fidelity and feature completeness. Metal Gear Solid 1 - Epsxe, it's better than the PC port for sure (too many compatibility problems imho) Metal Gear Solid 2 - The PC port is ok, but 16:9 is fucked up, so if you want that too you should play it with PS2 emulator (pcsx2) and 16:9 hack Metal Gear Solid 3 - PCSX2, it's very very heavy and you'll probably would not be able to watch cutscenes at full speed if you'll increase internal resolution Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops - PPSSPP, but controls suck even with a decent pad Metal Gear Solid 4 - Nope, maybe in the future.
